Mediterranean - 13 May 25 2023, the French Riviera, Villefranche-sur-Mer, France

 So we've finally made it to the south of France, the French Riviera.  The itinerary originally had a stop in Monte Carlo but the Grand Prix just happens to be underway now so the port was changed to Villefranche-sur-Mer instead, only 4 km from Nice, France, and 20 km from Monoco, and 20 from Monte Carlo.   Nice is home to two stars: Elton John, and Tina Turner (she died yesterday at the age of 83). We toured Nice, on Viking's included walking tour.  This is the only stop where the ship is anchored requiring tendoring to shore.  The view from our stateroom is the beautiful country side and one of several yachts, along with its dinghy speedboat zipping the owners or guests to shore.  Ah the rich and famous.  We've seen helicopters across the sky tracking from the airport to the city.  I'm guessing that the rich and famous prefer helicopter rides to SUVs or speed boats, I would too. Mediterranean - 1 - May 13 2023 - Venice

  Venice - a city of canals, where walking or sailing via canals is the main transport, no vehicles are allowed in the main part of the city.  This is a city for lovers with gondola rides, and outdoor cafes (for true Italian coffees or wine sipping).  Picturesque! Our latest cruise adventure has begun!!!!!  A Mediterrean cruise (with Viking) starting in Venice, sailing around Italy then a couple of stops in France and Spain.  We've scheduled 2 extra days at the beginning and 2 at the end on our own.  Here is the itinerary-  The flight over was extra long  with 3 segments:  Greenville > Newark > Toronto > Venice.  The 1st layover was almost 5 hours leaving plenty of time for a leisurely lunch at Shake Shack and a call with Melissa (her BD was May 13.)  Everything seemed to go as planned until Toronto.  We should have had a 2.5 hr layover, but for some unknown reason the flight to Venice was an hour and 10 minutes earlie...

Mediterranean - 2 - May 14 2023 Rainy day in Venice

This is our only full day in Venice and the weather forecast is 100% rain, and it was right with rain morning through mid-afternoon, then again late afternoon.  Temps in the high 50's. We opted to checkout the  Doge Palace in the morning,  against the advice of the travel guides that said to wait until late afternoon when the crowds thin. The timing worked in our favor, lucky us.  Later, when the weather cleared for a while, we had a lovely gondola ride.                                               Our hotel provided breakfast, it was  room service style as they don't have common space. Breakfast was promptly delivered at 8:30am, Italian style breads and coffee and we also opted for the eggs, fruit and pastries.  Oh so good. A few shots of our room..... Doge Palace served  the most important council ruling body in the Venetian Republ...
